it's a good idea to use cardio as the "lubrication". When I went to a back pain clinic for exercises, they always had me do 5 to 10 minutes on the treadmill to warm up -- even before doing the stretching exercises. Stretching was done both before and after the muscle strengthening exercises on machines.
Aside from cardio and pilates/yoga/dance, you will probably want to add in some strength training later on in your program.
