you do know ahead of time that they've gotten something for the kids. Of course, you should take a bottle of wine or some flowers also (as a hostess gift for the dinner). While you certainly don't have to give people a gift that's the equal value of what they gave you (since you have no way of knowing that ahead of time), it's certainly polite to take something when you know that they have something for you.
