This is just me, but:
(1) You can't change other people and there is no use trying.
(2) But you don't have to play into their little games. I would probably discuss this very openly with my kids (in a few weeks) and express your discomfort. Explain that it is nothing for dd to feel guilty about and nothing for ds to feel jealous about; it is just about a MIL trying to reward and punish people with objects, which is wrong. And you are sorry that your kids have to be in the middle of it. And I'd let them express their feelings about it to you.
