It doesn't hurt because of the root canal - the tooth is dead.
Whenever you get a root canal, it's very important to get a crown - the tooth becomes brittle because when they remove the nerve, that cuts off its blood supply.
Hopefully, your tooth didn't break down so deep below the gum that they can't build it up and save it.
In the best case, you'll get a build up (which is a new big and strong filling) and a crown.
