It is listed as an 8th grade subject. She has mainly studied world history - only did a brief overview of American history when she was much younger, so much of this has been new for her.
She is really enjoying it; she was just discussing with me today what she's learning about the Constitution and the powers of the various branches of government. I think it's great that she is relating what she's learning to last fall's elections and the upcoming 2008 election. It seems she is beginning to comprehend the big picture. At her age, I had no earthly idea, LOL.
I skimmed the book when it first came, and was very impressed with it. I really like that it's so "personable", not dry and dusty like the texts I had in school. The many biographical sketches help to flesh out the text and show what life was like in that time period.
She has also become very interested in the lives of the presidents this year as a result of what she's been learning.
All in all, it's been much better than I had even imagined.
HTH :-)
