When he can write a narration comfortably on his own, even a short, basic one, then he's ready for WT. I wouldn't start him before then. The older the student, the more maturely the handle the material and the more interesting the things they do with it. You DON'T have to use it early or soon to get full benefit, and in fact he'll probably get a lot more out of it later, when he's fully ready.
