... My thoughts on Jump In are included in both threads (links below), but there are comments from others as well. We're now up to page 120 of the 233 page Student Book. We will easily finish Jump In by the end of the school year. We will not be using all the "writing plunges" in the Teacher Book -- not fond of a lot of the suggested topics, and we are too busy doing other writing for other school subjects (e.g., right now, trying to finish up a multi-page report on Ancient Egypt that he's been working on for 6 weeks).

So far, Jump In has focused on factual types of writing, which has gone smoothly. I do like the great amount of detail in the teaching portions of the Student Book on how to organize your thinking. Our tentative long-range writing plan for our struggling writer:

8th gr. - Jump In
9th gr. - Wordsmith
10th gr. - use bits and pieces of Put That in Writing
11th gr. - (possibly) Wordsmith Craftsman
12th gr. - (possibly) online writing course, or writing class at local community college
