I'm thinking of doing this in the grade 5 book with ds (almost 10) who is done the grade 4 book. I'm pretty sure he can test out of the first 40 or so lessons, and he's pretty quick to understand math concepts and apply them.
What I'm thinking is - doing lessons 41-170 over the next 17 weeks, which would mean 8 lessons a week. I'd go over each lesson's concept with him for about 2 lessons a day, 4 days a week (or so); let him practice some problems on the new concept, and then pick and choose problems from the two lessons for him to do on his own. I wouldn't give him twice the amount of work - that'd be too much for him.
Is there any glaring reason why I shouldn't do this? I've noticed in the grade 5 TM that in the Teaching Guide, it sometimes gives direction on what problems can be skipped, so I figure that the publishers figure they have plenty of practice built in! :)
Am I correct in thinking that book 5 is mostly like book 4, only more in depth? This is another reason why I think ds could do what I'm thinking of doing.
Are books 6, 7, and 8 much more advanced? Move quicker? As my hope is to have him finish book 8 by the end of grade 7, I want him to have the time to spend a whole year on all 170 lessons in book, each year. I had earlier thought I'd just test him out of the first few chapters of those levels, but I don't think I'm comfortable with that now.
Any input? Thanks for helping me think this through - it's really bothering me!!
