Last week, I finished reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. It is a true story about the Ebola virus. I d recommend it as supplemental reading while studying viruses in biology. Preston s literary descriptions of a virus are the word pictures lacking from biology textbooks.

But what I wanted to share with you is a Preston quote about biology. When the trek through biology is difficult, rather than rebut with the typical it-will-get-easier response we moms so often tend to offer, give them Preston s more accurate take on biology:

In biology,
nothing is clear,
everything is too complicated,
everything is a mess,
and just when you think you understand something,
you peel off a layer
and find deeper complication beneath.
Nature is anything but simple.
