I have used (or tried to use) Jacobs with two of my sons and both of them had "issues" with the program. Their main complaint is that Jacobs doesn't explain things well enough and they often felt left to figure things out on their own. I think Jacobs takes a somewhat inductive approach in its teaching style and my guys prefer a more straight-forward approach such as Lial's. If your son is good at math, he may prefer the engaging style of Jacobs though. I don't know of any place to look at samples of it online. I think you can see samples of Singapore and Teaching Textbooks online at their websites. I haven't used them though, so I can't offer any opinion on them.
