We have found it to be a pretty engaging math book. My dd is pretty good at math but more a word person, and Jacobs was a very good fit. Her younger brother is now doing it and liking it. Jacobs includes interesting applications of the math he's teaching; he has a personality that comes through in the book. Some people find him a little wordy, but we are a word-oriented family and like that aspect pretty well.
My dd went on to use Lial's Intermediate Algebra and really didn't love it, though it worked OK.
